It's the highest since 54.7% in May 2006.
Economists surveyed by MarketWatch were expecting the index to remain relatively soft at 51%. See Economic Calendar.
The report was very strong, economists said. At 54.7%, the ISM is consistent with growth of 4% in the economy.
"If sustained, this would cast serious doubt on our view that the economy will slow further," wrote Ian Shepherdson, chief U.S. economist for High Frequency Economics, in an email. Using only 100 amps at 460 volts, the advanced inverter power supply compensates for variances in line voltage (that typically cause inconsistencies in resistance welding) and maintains a stable, reliable, powerful welding current, thereby yielding consistent quality welds.

EVS Metal in the news

EVS Metal melds companies to recover from telecom bust
Riverdale manufacturer increases customer base, delivers on smaller jobs
BY TIM O'REILEY DAILY RECORD

RIVERDALE -- As the sales outlook grew steadily gloomier five years ago, the co-owners of EVS Metal decided to put all their chips on red, in the words of president Scott Berkowitz.
The company, which makes sheet metal enclosures to precise-enough dimensions to house electronic components, had soared as a supplier to the telecommunications industry during the booming 1990s.

read the rest at: http://www.dailyrecord.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060927/BUSINESS01/609270311/1011/BUSINESS

Arcelor-Mittal agreement lifts Asian steelmakers

By Ilya Garger, MarketWatch
Last Update: 5:03 AM ET Jun 26, 2006
HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Asian steel shares got a boost Monday after an agreement between Mittal Steel Co. and Arcelor SA to create the world's largest steel company raised expectations of further industry consolidation in a region that boasts four of the world's six largest steelmakers.
"There's a possibility that Mittal will come to Asia," said Yoji Takeda, vice president of RBC Investment Management in Hong Kong.
